The Start of School

It's tradition at our house to take photos on the front steps before school on the first day. So, here are this year's:

This outfit should have been Becca's "1st day of school" outfit. Only problem is that the temperature was supposed to be 103 degrees. We'll have to save it for cooler weather. Maybe school picture time! But, I had to get a picture of her in it. She's such a good sport to put up with her crazy Mommy. I got her up, had her put it on, we went out front (it was still a bit dark), and took the pictures. Then she had to go back in and put on her actual outfit for the day - which of course we had to take pictures of too!!

Becca was starting Kindergarten. I was really quite OK with it. I seemed to do all my "grieving" last Spring, and cherished every one of those last moments of her being home with me. Sunday night, when I was tucking her in, we were talking about how exciting it was that she was going to be a Kindergartner. Then she said, "It's just really a bummer that I won't be here at home with you anymore. We'll never have just you and me time again." It was all I could do to keep the tears back. I hadn't really realized that she had a grasp on that. But I guess seeing her brother come and go every day for 4 years and not be home with us... she gets it. Ugh. That was hard.

Afternoon report:

Becca LOVED her first day of school. She said her teacher was beautiful (I agree, she's adorable) and that she made 2 new friends already. And she loved being able to finally ride a big yellow school bus.

Brough, on the other hand, did not have a great day. Our district rezoned last year, and we're at another school now. All of his buddies are still at the old school. He said, "I don't really like any of the kids, this school smells bad, and we didn't even do any multiplication! We just reviewed addition. I hate reviewing!!" aaaah... the struggles of a math whiz! :-)

We had plans to get together with our friends for ice cream in the afternoon. We've always done something after the first day of school since the boys were in Kindergarten. They became friends in pre-school when they were 3.

Brough and Stratton

Becca and Hays
(the younger siblings)

Brough needed to see his old friend that afternoon. It was good for both of them.

Brough's bad attitude continued into Tuesday. He could think of not one good thing, and had no interest in ever returning to that school. He's always loved school and it broke my heart to see him like this. He and his sister had been bugging me to take them to the Dollar Store. So, I told him I'd give him a dollar for every truly good thing he could tell me about school that afternoon. Not just that they had lunch, or that the day finally ended at 3:00, but truly good things. I figured he might come home with 4 or 5, but that afternoon, he told me 10 good things that happened that day. And he was smiling and enthusiastic! Yay! He's been back to himself since. Whew! Oh, and I suggested that he take his 4th grade activity book he'd been working on this summer and ask his teacher if he could work in it when he was finished with his addition problems. Thankfully, she said yes, and he is now able to work multiplication and division on his own instead of "just boring addition review". (I don't think I ever tried to seek out harder math problems!)

All seems to be well now. The kids are getting into the groove of school, and I'm enjoying a silent house during the day. Now, I just need to get myself into a good groove of getting busy on all my projects and getting off the computer....

Ready for School!

One last little bit of extra summer fun? Check.

School supplies ready to go? Check.

Backpacks loaded and hanging on their hooks? Check.

Clothes for the week put in the bins? Check.

(my new "brilliant idea" for this year)

Mom ready to send her kids to a new school, and more than that, send her baby to Kindergarten???

umm..... I'll get back to you tomorrow!
I took the summer off from blogging, but now I'm ready to start back up.
We had a fantastic and very busy summer, which I will be sharing in the coming weeks.

Waffle House

I grew up in Alabama and Georgia, home of the Waffle House. They are few and far between here in Texas. However, there is one near the Austin Airport. It has become a tradition for the kids and me to stop and eat there whenever we have to take Patrick to the airport.

He left today to go to London... well, Surrey to be exact. He was acting all mopey about it, but I don't feel too bad for him. He's staying at Pennyhill Park Hotel, which is a 5-star property offering such unique activities as shooting clays and archery. Also, in the directions for how to get there, they list coordinates for those arriving by helicopter. Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's going to be just fine!!

So, we said good-bye...
I think Pat was giving Brough the "you're the man of the house while I'm gone, so take care of Mom and Becca" speech.

Bye, honey!! Love you!

And... off to the Waffle House.

I don't know what to tell you, the place just makes me happy. From the way it's laid out so you can watch all of the food being prepared, to the signs on the wall, to the yummy, yummy waffles... It's just a good place to be.

It wasn't very busy in there this afternoon. I guess 5:30 is not prime time at the Waffle House. The kids wanted to sit at the counter and watch all the food being prepared. Plus, it's just good fun to swivel in those tall stools.

The cook and the waitress were so nice to the kids. The cook would talk to the kids as she was fixing everything. The kids decided to order 2 different things, and share with each other. The cook overheard them, and went ahead and made up their plates with the food already divided up. Awesome!!

Then, my waffle arrived. Let me tell ya, if you've never been to a Waffle House, you cannot comprehend the bliss that is sitting on this plate...

Yes, that is butter pooled up in all the little waffle squares, and, yeah... I ate the whole thing!!

After she finished eating, Becca went over and checked out the juke box.

And, it just wouldn't be a family outing without one of the kids being weird. So, here is a picture of Becca... who figured out how to use her dress as a cup holder. What can I say? She's creative.

It's All Good For Me Too!!!

My two blogging/Emmaus buddies, Jen and Catherine both have really cute signs that say, "It's All Good" in their yards (both signs have made appearances in each blog). I think maybe they bought them together. Or one of them bought one for the other. I can't remember the story now.

Well, my friend Barbara gave me a dish the other day that says, you guessed it....

And guess what? It came filled with chocolate!! I had to eat it all so you could see what was written in the bottom of the dish, dontchyaknow!!!
Woo Hoo!!

Too Hard

I've not been writing for awhile. My grandfather died a couple of weeks ago, and I want to write something special for him. But I just haven't been able to do it yet. And it felt weird to do silly, frivolous blog posts before I wrote that one.

However, I have decided it's OK to post some other stuff. I will post something about him soon. It's OK to take a little extra time, that way I'll do it right. And maybe by writing other stuff, it will make it a little easier to write his.

Mother's Day

I'm behind, but I wanted to share a little bit about our Mother's Day...
The plan was for me to sleep in, which is always appreciated. From my sleepy state, I heard Patrick and the kids up and watching a movie. But to my surprise, the movie was put on for a fake out for old Mom! While the movie was playing, Pat and the kids were cleaning the kids' rooms, and Pat gave Brough a haircut. Wow!
But after I got up, the magic wore off. Bummer.
I can't remember why, but both kids got a case of the grumpies. I thought I'd share the pictures.
9:02 am Grumpy Boy sits outside the back door.
And at 9:10 am, Princess Pouts A Lot makes a return appearance...

But everyone was happy again before too long. Becca was still running a fever, so we decided to just hang at home. It was a lovely, lazy day!

Sick Girl

Just thought I'd share a photo of Becca when she was sick. When I took this picture, her temperature was 103.8!

Yes, I'd been on the phone with the nurse. We were doing Advil 'round the clock. Becca was in remarkably good spirits. In the picture, she is enjoying a cold wash cloth to the forehead and a Pedialyte Freezer Pop. I keep those in my freezer at all times. They are wonderful. I even munch on them when I have a stomach virus.
She's much better now!! Yay!

Turn, Turn, Turn

Ecclesiastes 3:1,2,4, 9-13
"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:
a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

"What does the worker gain from his toil? I have seen the burden God has laid on men. He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God."
We lost a good friend yesterday. Paul was one of those people that you felt like you'd known him your whole life as soon as you met him. A good guy, through and through. He was a dedicated and wonderful teacher - a middle school teacher, at that. He had such a gentle spirit and a wonderful laugh. And he had cancer.

Paul was married to Wanda, my Mother in-Law's best friend. They were the kind of couple we all hope to be. They loved each other. Cherished each other. Went fishing together. Had adventures together. Loved each other's kids and grandkids. They took care of each other, in more ways than they ever expected to when they started their journey together. They just fit.

Paul battled cancer off and on for years. He fought the good fight. And early yesterday morning, that fight ended. We will miss him so much.

And despite our sadness over his loss, life moves forward...

Even as we're so sad, we are rejoicing as well. Just yesterday our family suffered a loss (for there is no question that Paul was part of our family), today our family has grown.

Today, Pat's brother became a Dad! Today, we welcome this sweet baby girl to this world.

Isn't she beautiful?

And so we are thanking God for the gift of life. We thank Him for the gift of Paul's life and the mark Paul has left on each of our hearts. And we thank God for the gift of this precious new life - so full of promise. We pray that we might be fortunate enough to leave a mark on her heart as she grows. That she may know goodness and joy, laughter and adventure, and that she may live life to the fullest. Just as Paul did.

Surprise!!

I love surprises. Love, love, love them. Good surprises, that is. Not a huge fan of someone jumping out if front of me and yelling, "Boooo!!" That is a bad surprise, and I do not love these. My husband learned this early in our marriage when he jumped out at me from between two cars on a dark street one night.

Right now, I'm involved in some way in several surprises that will be unfolding over the next few months. It's very exciting, but it's very hard too!

I'm constantly worrying about something slipping out when I'm talking with one of the "surprise-ees". Anyone who knows me can tell you that I wear my emotions on my sleeve. I'm very easy to read. (Except those times when I'm intending to be funny, and am coming across snarky and mean. I'm working on that.) I'm just so afraid something's going to slip!!

Can't wait for the first one to unfold... Hmmm... When will it be? Who will it be for? Stay tuned...

Happy Easter!

Just thought I'd share a little of our Easter...

I forgot about dying eggs until Saturday night... ooops!! The kids didn't seem to mind staying up a little late to get them done. They're good sports, those kids of mine!

Becca decided that she didn't need to use the dipper or a spoon.

We tried marbleizing the eggs this year. They came out pretty neat. Just dip in one color, let them dry, add vegetable oil to the dyes, and dip the eggs in another color. The colors didn't come through properly in the photos, (they were really bright) but you get the idea...

They selected eggs to put out for the Easter Bunny, and put together their usual tray of carrots - with the addition of celery this year - and a note for the Easter Bunny. We always put our baskets out on the front porch so our dog doesn't bother the Easter Bunny, and so she doesn't eat all the chocolate!

The kids woke up before us Sunday morning, grabbed their Easter Baskets and took them back to their rooms to check them out. So, alas, no photos of full baskets to share with you.

It was pouring rain when we woke up, but it cleared up and turned into a perfect day!

We got ready for church and headed out. It was a lovely service, although our pastor is always amazing!

Everyone looked so nice, and we haven't ever taken Easter photos, so I rounded up the troops. Managed to get a cute one of the kiddos pretty quickly.
*sigh* What perfect, perfect children.

Brough took a nice picture of Pat and me.

And then, while trying to take this picture, things started falling apart...

We had an unexpected visit from Princess Pouts-a-Lot.

And then, while I was dealing with the Princess...

Boys!.... Boys!!...

Arg!!!

OK, Much better!

(although I won't tell you what Pat said to get Brough to smile)

The princess deemed us worthy of her presence again, and I'm so glad that she did!!

I hope your Easter was filled with unexpected blessings!

A Fun Surprise!

The kids and I were running some errands yesterday that were in the same area as where our old Target used to be. (see the previous post for info about our new store) We were surprised to see signs saying "Open to Public" and "Fixture Sale". So we wandered in.

Oh my! It was our old store, the one we thought we'd never be in again, but it was stripped bare! We had a lot of fun walking around and looking at the stacks of shelves. It was a little surreal.
The kids wanted to visit where the toy section had been. We found the fixture that had held the Schleich animals that the kids love so much. And what did my highly observant son find in the back of one of the bins??
A little meerkat that had been left behind!

I decided that since the store was completely stripped down, it would be OK for the little critter to come home with us. (is that terrible?) And so, with our new little friend we said good-bye to the old store, and headed back out to see what other adventures the day might hold for us.

Our New Target Store

Our town opened a new Target a few weeks ago. The kids and I decided to go check it out.

As we parked, I started thinking whether it would be weird to take some photos before we head into the new store for the first time. I decided that yes, it probably would be.

As we walked up to the front of the store, my son said, "Hey, Mom, take our picture here!" as he climbed onto one of the red concrete spheres out front. HOW MUCH DO I LOVE MY KIDS????

Then there was this by the front door. Pretty cool photo spot actually. We may try again when the sun isn't so darn bright.

Hey, look what I found!! They have EVERYTHING here! Picked up 2 pretty cute kids. And they were on sale!!!

Note for the germophobes (like me): These carts were brand new!!

Patrick asked me if I loved the new store, and to my surprise I didn't. It was nice, but it didn't feel like my Target store. I've been cruising the aisles of the old one for about 10 years now. It's been my place to run away. It's been my "happy place" to just wander for hours and not even buy anything. And now it's closed down, and we have the new one. I'm sure this one will grow on me, we just need some time to get to know each other.

Spring Break

Barbara and Karim are very dear friends of ours. We met through church, and have had many an adventure with them. Barbara is a pastor, and right now she's appointed to a small church in South Texas. Karim has kept his job near us, with the hopes that someday soon (please, God!) she'll be appointed closer to home. Karim spends weekends with her, but it's hard during the week. She's in a small town, far away from the people she loves. And while she likes many of the people there, she's still quite lonely. So, when we can, the kids and I load up and go invade her all too quiet town. Which is what we did the first few days of spring break.

One day, we went drove to Corpus Christi. We had planned to go for a walk on the jetties or boat docks, or go see a movie, but ended up on the beach. We were all wearing jeans - clearly not well planned. Still, the first beach experience of the year is always the best!! So we rolled up our pants legs, and enjoyed it.
(Thanks to the position of the sun, I could only get photos from behind.)

Soaking wet and covered in sand!!!

No towels. No change of clothes. Oh, well. That happens sometimes when spontaneous fun occurs.

Another day, we went over to see King Ranch. At 825,000 acres, it is the largest ranch in the US. To put it in perspective, it is almost the size of the state of Rhode Island!! Unfortunately, we didn't have time to do the hour and a half long tour that they offer. It was fun to learn more about the ranch.

The "running W" is the symbol of the ranch, and is branded on all cattle... and just about anything else they can put it on!! :-)

Barbara and me (in the bright, bright sun)

Cow!!!!

We live in Texas. We see cows all the time. But for some reason, it's always fun getting close to them.

It was a great visit, although short. I always feel our crazy, loud visits help her appreciate the quiet and solitude a little bit when we leave!

More coming about Barbara and Karim. We are celebrating Newroz - the Kurdish New Year - with them this weekend.
